Siyanda Booi better known as Kay Kay, a rap phenomenal, is Grahamstown born and raised. He was born on the 11th of August in 1992. He grew up in one of Grahamstown notorious townships. Music was brought to his attention at an early, during the era of Kwaito. A shift from Kwaito to Hip Hop has worked into his advantage. He was influenced by the likes Nas, Fabulous, 50c to name a few.
His ability to write lyrics began in 2010 when he could recite a mainstream artist’s full song, only to impress his friends. In 2012 he met with Masixole Ncanywa known as Seven and Zanele Frans known as Mantombi, they wrote songs together and later on formed a group called Ikons. In 2014, a, then, independent recording studio, Dakkie Yam Studios, granted them an opportunity to record and release an EP
They came up with some few good songs which people loved. They performed around town on events like June 16 Youth events, Fingo Festival and Food For Thought Hip Hop Sessions. They had interviews and their songs playlisted on a community radio, Radio Grahamstown. A change in time, growing up and responsibilities saw the crew to part ways.
On one of the Hip Hop gatherings, he met with Zolani Tshobo and Zuko Mantla, another town’s hyped hip hop heads. They together joined venture and formed a crew named Rhanga crew. The trio had unique and different types of styles that saw a bright side of Grahamstown hip hop and changed it completely. Early 2013, he met with Azlan Makalima, a Hip Hop radio show presenter, a hip hop cipher organiser and Hip Hop artist/Producer. They together released a single titled The Light of a dawn and shot a video for the song.
In 2015, he, alongside Zeezee opened for the biggest event in Eastern Cape, Drumboss Xperience. Opening for acts like, K.O, Kwesta, Dr Malinga, HeavyK to be exact. 2016 saw a growth in him, he was part of the Fringe Festival in one of the national Festival in South Africa, he performed on National Arts Festival with his newly found crew, Smart Natural Gang or simply Smanga better know as #FutureMashamplani.
He enjoy being in the eye, he grew, became more responsible and stood on his own. Today he is well known for the songs such like Zakka, Underground creature, Phuma and Panda Remix. He aim for greater heights and now under an independent label, Multimedia Makenik.
